Lately, it seems, a lot of people (Vogue Australia included) have been crushing on short cropped hair for women.

There is something unbelievably chic about a woman with short hair. Not saying this just because I too have my hair closely cropped. To me, there is a sophistication and elegance about short hair. Sure, not everyone can pull it off. And it does require a bit of bravery, particularly for those who have had long hair for so long. The latter definitely applied to me before I took the plunge. My hair seemed to be for a long while a security blanket of sorts. Many people questioned why I went for the big chop - was I going through some sort of personal trauma? Why resort to something so drastic? For the record, no I wasn’t and long hair can be very difficult (and not to mention expensive) to maintain.

I find it interesting that long luxurious locks in many cultures, particularly those originating in Asian countries, is often a stereotypical indicator of beauty.

Maybe what draws me to these women is that they seem to embody the contrary to the above, that long hair does not have to define what is regarded as feminine. Plus they all radiate that kinda fierceness that comes with bucking popular social convention.
